Scholarships

Tiger Boosters manages two scholarships.  One was established in memorial to a cherished Wilson Community member, and another by an alumnus to give back to the Wilson community.

Shellie Bowers Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award

Shellie Bowers was a Wilson legend and mainstay. He graduated from Wilson in 1981, having helped start a radio station at the school, and later worked on staff at the school. He played baseball at Wilson and then coached the JV baseball team for 20+ years. Shellie became the was the voice of Wilson announcing football, basketball and baseball games. Shellie was known for his, “First and Ten, WILSON!”, and his “ThreeeeeeeeeePointer” calls. Shellie loved DC and his sports teams, DC United & the Nationals.

Shellie passed away in 2018, and the Wilson community and alumni grieved his passing. Tiger Boosters, at the behest of the Wilson Athletic Director, established a scholarship in his name and raised money. Fundraising efforts are ongoing, as this is meant to be an annual scholarship.

The annual Shellie Bowers Jr. Memorial Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship that goes to a graduating student-athlete who best demonstrates the commitment, enthusiasm, dedication and passion of Shelly Bowers.

Nominations are accepted by the Wilson Athletic Director, and the winner will be selected by the Athletic Department and Administration at Wilson. This scholarship is announced at the annual ESPY Awards.

Cheer Book Scholarship Award

The Cheer Book Scholarship was founded by Ms. Soumayah Zein in 2017.

Ms. Zein has deep roots at Wilson. She is a Wilson alumni and former Wilson cheerleader. Her son also attended Wilson High School, and she founded and coached the JV Cheer team at Wilson (2001). She is the energy behind our amazing Cheer alumni, who’ve performed every year since 2012 at the Homecoming game. She has also been instrumental in creating a network and sisterhood among Wilson Cheer alumni.

Ms. Zein launched the Cheer Book Scholarship to address a need that many families face: Paying for books in college. Fundraising happens year-round, but especially at homecoming among alumni. You may also donate below.

The annual Cheer Book Scholarship goes to a senior cheerleader who is attending college immediately after graduation from Wilson. The amount varies depending on fundraising.

Nominations are accepted by the Wilson Athletic Director and Cheer Coaches, and the winner will be selected by them. This scholarship is announced at the annual ESPY Awards.
